Old Time Radio and the Great American Songbook

This one-hour presentation by Steve Darnall, host of “Those Were The Days” on WDCB, examines how radio helped to give birth to the “Great American Songbook” by giving songs and singers a national audience. Featuring clips from some of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century as they were heard on radio—including Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer and a rare 1934 performance by George Gershwin! Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Library.

This program is being presented as part of Celebrating Seniors Week, in which community organizations, agencies and businesses partner together to create events to educate and entertain older adults, as well as keep them active. Senior Resource Guides listing all of the events will be available.
