Adult Program Events Schedule

All events listed here for Summer of 2008 will be held at the North Riverside Public Library, 2400 Des Plaines Ave, North Riverside, IL. For most events, advanced registration is requested but not required. Call 708-447-0869 for more details.

 

On June 14, a drawing was held for Cirque Du Soleil prizes to patrons who signed up for the Adult Summer Reading Program.  The first prize was a pair of tickets to Cirque Du Soleil's Kooza performance on July 2 at the United Center and was won by Pat Copp.  Ten second place winners each won a Cirque Du Soleil clown nose and CD-ROM.  They are Claudia Alvarez, Amy Beggs, Gina Bojovic, Kathy Bonnar, Steve Clark, Jerry Hill, Jerry Kosik, Angela Lemon, Nancy Lewandowski, and Myra Zak.  Congratulations to all the winners!  Thank you to all who entered.  We would also like to thank Cirque Du Soleil for donating the prizes.   

 

ADULT SUMMER READING PROGRAM     Thumbnail

Registration begins on Tuesday, May 27.

BOOKS AND THE BIG SCREEN is the theme for the Adult Summer Reading Program.  Read at least five library books in nine weeks.  You can also enter weekly drawings to win  movie-related prizes.  The more books you read, the more chances you receive.  And if you attend a Wednesday Movie Matinee, you can fill out a chance for a weekly drawing along with any movies you’ve watched based on library books read during the summer.  When you finish, you will qualify for the grand prize at the End of the Adult Summer Reading Program Celebration on August 13.  Sign up in adult or youth services or at the circulation desk and receive a reading log and a free gift.  Registration begins on Tuesday, May 27.  

 

ENTER THE WEEKLY DRAWING!

 

You must be registered for the Adult Summer Reading Program to participate.  Fill out a chance for every book read and movie seen based on a book read.  The drawings will be held after 12:00 p.m. on Saturdays.  Winners need not be present.

 

Congratulations to Kaila Sweeney who won the first weekly drawing on June 14!  Kaila won an Indiana Jones set of 4 tumblers, 4 Indiana Jones popcorn pop-ups, and an Indiana Jones magazine.

 

Congratulations to Kaila Sweeney again who won the second drawing on June 21.  Kaila won a Blockbuster $25.00 gift card.  

 

Congratulations to Wendy Kolosky who won the third drawing on June 28.  Wendy won a pair of Classic Cinemas $10.00 gift cards.  

 

Congratulations to Loretta Ruppert who won the fourth drawing on July 5.  Loretta won a Borders $25.00 gift card.

 

The prize for week five is a Barnes and Noble $20.00 gift card.  The drawing will be held on July 12.

 

The prize for week six is a Best Buy $25.00 gift card.  The drawing will be held on July 19.

 

The prize for week seven is a $25.00 gift certificate for Marconi's Restaurant in LaGrange.  The drawing will be held

 on July 26.

 

The prize for week eight is movie popcorn and candy.  The drawing will be held on August 2.

 

The prize for week nine is a pair of Classic Cinemas $10.00 gift cards.  The drawing will be held on August 9.

  

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 9 at 7:00 p.m.

 

Come and learn how Route 66 was built, why it started in Chicago , and how the building of the Interstate highway system brought on its official demise.  Then take a virtual tour down the road that refuses to die to see some of the treasures that still exist on “the highway that’s the best.”  Highway historian David Clark will present colorful PowerPoint slides and music in telling the story of the world’s most famous highway.  Mr. Clark is the author of the books, “Exploring Route 66 in Chicagoland” and “Images of America : Route 66 in Chicago .”  For information on Route 66 and other highways that run through or near Chicago, go to www.windycityroadwarrior.com

If you’ve completed the Adult Summer Reading Program, we invite you to this celebration to discuss favorite books read during the summer.  We’ll also have the grand prize drawing.  Popcorn, movie candy, and pop will be available.

Chicago Sun-Times (NewsBank) provides full-text articles on local news, issues, events, people and much more from current and archived issues of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper.  Updated daily, it includes obituaries, editorials, announcements, sports, real estate and other sections.  

   

Grolier Online

 

Grolier Online is a research portal to three popular databases.  Lands and Peoples is an encyclopedia of countries, cultures and current events.  The New Book of Popular Science is a science and technology encyclopedia, and includes articles on science in the news. Encyclopedia Americana is a general encyclopedia containing more than 45,000 in-depth articles, plus images, maps and web links.
