                                                    ADULT PROGRAMS

All events listed here for Spring of 2010 will be held at the North Riverside Public Library, 2400 S. Des Plaines Ave, North Riverside, Illinois. Registration is requested but not required except for the computer classes.  Registration and a $10 deposit is required for the computer classes which will be refunded when they are held.  The Wednesday Movie Matinee is drop in only and starts at 2:00 p.m.  You may register at the Circulation Desk or call the library at (708) 447-0869 to sign up. 

 

FROM ANCIENT PERSIA TO MODERN IRAN

Wednesday, March 17 at 6:30 p.m.

World traveler Bill Helmuth takes you from the marvels of Ancient Persia to the reality of Modern Iran, a constrictive theocracy in turmoil.  Bill will present a PowerPoint presentation of his 1,000-mile overland trip.  Along with understanding the problems of Radical Islam, you will visit some of the greatest architecture anywhere.   For more information, go to www.billhelmuthtravels.com.

 

 

INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT WORD

Saturday, March 20 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Learn about the basics of word processing:  how to create, correct, change a document's appearance, print, save and re-open a document.  Experience with keyboarding (typing) is helpful.  Class is limited to four people.  A $10.00 deposit is required. 

 

"LADY T." JAZZ COMBO

Wednesday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m.

In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month, North Riverside's own "Lady T." (a.k.a. Toscanellie Marcelain) and her jazz combo will perform standards as well as selections from her new CD, "Speak Low."  Her musicians include Ben Paterson on keyboard, Jim Pierce on guitar, and Doug Hayes on bass.  For more information about "Lady T.," go to www.ladytjazz.net.

 

INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT EXCEL

Saturday, April 17 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Learn what a spreadsheet is and how to use it for storing, organizing and manipulating data such as numbers, calculations, text, formulas and more.  You'll also become familiar with parts and functions of the Excel screen and practice basic mathematical operations such as summing columns and rows of figures.  Prerequisite: Must have basic computer skills.  Class is limited to four.  A $10.00 deposit is required. 

 

HOME BUYING 101

Wednesday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m.

As part of Money Smart Week, we will present a workshop given by Standard Bank & Trust Co. of North Riverside.  Learn from experts about the home buying and financing process.  The speakers will be Standard Bank mortgage banker Chris Pod, realtor Karen Arndt from Re/Max Properties, and attorney Joseph Dvorak.  For more information, go to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago's website at www.chicagofed.org.

Tracy Lord's (Grace Kelly) ex-husband, C.K. Dexter-Haven (Bing Crosby) declares his undying love for her after he finds out that Tracy is about to marry George Kittredge (John Lund.)  Frank Sinatra and Celeste Holm play the reporter and photographer, respectively, who are covering the wedding.  The outstanding Cole Porter score includes "True Love," "Well Did You Evah," and "Now You Has Jazz" with Louis Armstrong and his Band.  In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month.

Julia Child's (Meryl Streep) beginning in the cooking profession is intertwined with the life of thirty-year-old Julie Powell (Amy Adams), who decides to cook all 524 recipes in Child's book, "Master the Art of French Cooking" in one year to escape the monotony of her daily life.
