LEGOs Club Mega-Build Challenge!

Just how HUGE can you go?  Each month will feature a different challenge. For 1st grade and older; kids in kindergarten may attend WITH an adult.  You’ll be using the library’s LEGOs to build with, so please DO NOT bring your own!

Fridays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.:  Sept 8; Oct 13; Nov 10; Dec 8.


Crafts & Cookies

For 2nd grade and up; kids in kindergarten or 1st grade may attend WITH an adult.  Fun, seasonal crafts for different ages…and cookies!

Fridays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.:  Sept 15; Oct 20; Nov 17.


Family Bingo & Loteria Familia

North Riverside residents age 3 and older.  Children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Bring the whole family for an hour of classic fun!  All ages can play Bingo (with number cards) and Loteria (with picture cards) and win prizes!

Saturdays at 2 p.m.:  Sept 30; Oct 28; Nov 25.


Harry Potter Film Festival

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first Harry Potter book’s publication, all eight Harry Potter movies will be shown on Sundays in September and October at 1:00 p.m. in the main floor Meeting Room.  Refreshments will be provided.  Children under 10 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian age 18 or over.

Tri-Wizard Challenge

Attention, all Muggle fans of Harry Potter!  We invite you to compete in our Tri-Wizard Challenge – a scavenger hunt that will send you hither and yon throughout the library in search of magical answers!  Pick up your weekly clues at the Adult Reference Desk or the Youth Services Help Desk.  Once you find the answer, write it on the clue ticket and drop it in the jars at either desk for a chance to win magical prizes!  Winners will be drawn weekly!  For North Riverside children, teens and adults.

Did you ever want to play Quidditch?  Now is your chance!! Come join us for an afternoon of catching the Snitch and being the best Chaser you can be!  Don’t know the rules? No problem! We will help walk (or fly!) you through them!  Grab a friend, create a team, and let’s play Quidditch! Grades 4 – 12; parents welcome!

Read to a Dog

WE ARE FULLY BOOKED – Only taking names for the Waiting List!  You will receive a call or email ONLY if there are any openings available.  

Did you know that dogs love books?  The PAWSitive Therapy Troupe is back with sweet, gentle dogs who would love you to read to them.  For independent readers of all skill levels.  Sign up for up to three 15-minute time slots.  Pre-registration is a must!  Readers who sign up by 9/15/17 and show up on time will receive a special prize!

BBC Hollydays Gingerbread House Craft

Make a delicious and unique holiday centerpiece!  All materials and instruction provided.

Cash or check payment (per house) is required at registration.  Residents: $15 (library pays $20); non-residents: $35 (full price).

Registration deadline is MONDAY, NOVEMBER 27 at the YS Help Desk in the lower level.  

Must be at least 6 years-old to participate; ages 6 to 11 must be with an adult.  Maximum of two people per house.

Frosty’s Winter Wonderland – Dave Herzog’s Marionettes PLUS a Visit from Santa Claus

Frosty’s Winter Wonderland is coming to town!  Join Dave Herzog and his wonderful marionettes for a fun-filled show featuring silly tales about Frosty and his friends.  Be sure to bring your camera to capture holiday memories as you visit Santa after the show!  ALL ages welcome!

Stuffed Animal Sleepover & Breakfast Bash

Your stuffed animal can spend a fun-filled night at the library!  Drop off your stuffed pal on Thursday, Dec. 21 at the lower level Help Desk.   Come back on Friday, Dec. 22 at 10:30 a.m. for breakfast and a slide show of all the animals’ wacky overnight adventures!   For kids ages 3 and up.

Drop off:  Thursday, Dec 21 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. at Help Desk.  Contact info required at drop off.

Pick up:  Friday, Dec 22 at 10:30 a.m. 



Junior Volunteers – 4th and 5th grade

North Riverside residents in 4th or 5th grade:  join the Junior Volunteers! Requirements:  attend a 20-minute training session to learn the basics of board book cleaning and shelf reading, and volunteer at least three times in the next six months.   Additional opportunities will be offered to “seasoned” Junior Volunteers.  See the YS Help Desk for more information.   Visit the YS Help Desk for a Junior Volunteer application.
