FOUNDATION COOKBOOKS STILL AVAILABLE

The second printing of the North Riverside Library Foundation Cookbooks has been delivered - just in time for your holiday shopping.  The cookbooks, which contain over 600 recipes contributed by village residents and Library patrons, cost $12 per copy. Those who purchase more than one cookbook will receive a special discount of $2 per book for each book beyond the first.

HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE

We thank the members of the Mater Christi Children's Choir and the Riverside-Brookfield High School Madrigal Singers, who entertained us at our annual Holiday Open House on December 3. We also thank the Friends of the Library for sponsoring the event.

TRUE FRIENDS

Our thanks go to the Friends of the Library, who truly are friends of our Library. Following their very successful book sale in October, the Friends have raised over $25,000 over the years, all of which was donated to the Library to enhance services to our patrons.

SHARE YOUR COLLECTION

The Library has a locked display case that you can use for a month. We want to show off your collection.

The board, staff and patrons of the Library would like to thank Janet Kosik for the February exhibit.

We also would like to thank our recent Display Case exhibitors - the students of Komarek School, November and January, and the Fischer family, December.

Upcoming exhibits will be provided by the Girl Scouts in March; Jass Whirl, April; and the North Riverside Garden Club, May.

We are seeking exhibitors for the second half of 2012. Those interested in providing an exhibit should contact Library Director Robert J. Lifka at (708) 447-0869.

FALL BOOK SALE

The Friends of the North Riverside Library are thanking the hundreds of people who helped make their annual fall used book sale a success.

Those who missed the sale can still purchase books and other materials at the Friends of the Library Perpetual Book Sale in the Library.

Organizers are thanking volunteers who helped set up before the sale, during the sale itself and tear down after the sale. They include Mickie Caldbeck, Phil Cihlar, Annie Delano, Elizabeth Dvorak, Marion Gekos, Nick Hoving, Shirley Hoving, Rosemarie Jirasek, Mary Lee, Jean Lindburg, Mary Lou Marchetti and Al Medelis. Also, Carol O'Meara, Barbara O'Neill, Millie Pendola, Jean Schindler, Craig Seidel, Roy Sidlo, Marilyn Grace Slanec, Adrienne Smith, Sharmayne Stach, Kay Subaitis, Louise Tompkins and Nancy Tuma. Library pages Danny Golub, Shawnn Hwang and Joe Silhavy also are commended for their assistance.

Donations for the Perpetual Sale and the Spring Used Book Sale are always accepted. They can be dropped off at the Library during regular business hours. Pickup service can be arranged by calling the Library at (708) 447-0869.

BANNED BOOKS WEEK RAFFLE

Fourteen patrons of the North Riverside Public Library were the lucky winners in the Library's annual Banned Books Week raffle.

Karel Ondra and Sarah Richied won North Riverside Mall gift cards, donated by the Friends of the Library; Marge Hook and Lillian Palucki, tickets to Classic Cinemas North Riverside, donated by Classic Cinemas; and Ted Esteghamat, Joan Kohnke, Mary Mathews, Jan Umbenhower and Loren Van Housen, tickets to the North Riverside Players presentation of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," donated by the North Riverside Players.

Other winners are Gina Watylyk, Banned Books Week T-shirt; Elizabeth Tomasek and Myra Zak, picnic blankets; Jerry Kosik, tool kit; and Leilani Navarro, travel clock and tote bag.

Observed since 1982, the annual event is a celebration of the freedom to read and reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted.

Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one's opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availablity of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them. After all, intellectual freedom can only exist where these two essential conditions are met.

Banned Books Week is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the American Library Association, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the Association of American Publishers and the National Association of College Bookstores. It is endorsed by the Center for the Book of the Library of Congress.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.

At the April 4 Village Board meeting, Village President Kenneth Krochmal and the North Riverside Village Board proclaimed April 11 to 16 as National Library Week in North Riverside.

FOUNDATION FUNDRAISERS

The North Riverside Library Foundation is continuing its partnership with Chili's through February 29, 2012.

Concerned North Riverside residents and patrons of the village’s public library have formed the North Riverside Library Foundation to provide support for the projects, programs and other needs of the Library. All donations to the Foundation are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

The Foundation is a 501(C)3 not-for-profit organization registered with the Internal Revenue Service and the State of Illinois. The Foundation will not replace tax revenue. Instead, the Foundation’s goal is to enhance the quality and range of library services and materials beyond tax revenue. The Foundation Board will work closely with staff at the Library to ensure that all gifts are put to the best use to benefit Library patrons and the community.

Serving on the Foundation’s Board of Directors are North Riverside residents Vera Wilt, president; Audrey Sprague, vice president; Stephanie Lanken, treasurer; Marge Hook, secretary; Annette Corgiat, Joseph DeRosier, Lenora Giurini, Minnie Glosniak and Kay Subaitis and Library Director Robert J. Lifka.

Through the Chili's Pepper Profit Program, the restaurant at 7225 W. Cermak Road in North Riverside,  will donate a portion of their proceeds from purchases made by those presenting North Riverside Library Foundation vouchers, which are available at the Circulation Desk or on the Foundation page of the Library website. Dine-in or carryout at any time on any day in JuNovember, December, January or February.

Organizers of the Foundation's fundraising cookbook are grateful to the hundreds of library patrons and village residents who contributed recipes. The cookbook will go to the printer later this summer and hopes are high that the cookbooks will be available in November.

AARP TAX COUNSELORS WILL RETURN

Counselors from the AARP Tax-Aide program will return on Thursday mornings in February, March and April to assist patrons with their income tax returns. Registration is available for February 16, February 23 and March 1 sessions at the Circulation Desk or by calling the Library at (708) 447-0869.

The counselors, who have received training from the Internal Revenue Service through the AARP Tax-Aide program, will be available for hour-long sessions by appointment only.  Signup sheets will be available in late January.

AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service. This free service can answer most of the tax issues faced by middle- and low-income taxpayers with special attention to those age 60 and older.

The AARP Tax-Aide program has operated since 1968 under a cooperative agreement with the IRS as part of its Tax Counseling for the Elderly program.

Since its birth, AARP Tax-Aide has helped over 27 million individuals file their taxes at more than 10,000 sites annually. AARP Tax-Aide sites are located in places convenient for taxpayers to get to, such as senior centers, libraries and malls. Volunteers can also visit taxpayers in their homes, if they are physically unable to visit a site.

The program is available from February 1 through April 15 each year.

The AARP Foundation is an affiliated 501 (c) (3) nonpartisan, organization established in 1961. It administers publicly and privately funded programs, such as AARP Tax-Aide, the AARP Senior Community Service Employment Program, and the AARP Home Equity Information Center. The Foundation also carries out the Washington, D.C. based advocacy programs funded through the Legal Counsel for the Elderly Inc. These programs also receive support from AARP.

TAX FORMS AVAILABLE AGAIN

Here we go again. Income tax season is upon us. Each year the Library tries to make the best of a frequently difficult situation for everyone by making federal and state tax forms available free of charge. If you cannot find the form you need, forms can be printed off the Internet for 10 cents per page.

You also may download and print forms from your computer at home. Federal tax forms and publications can be downloaded from the Internal Revenue Service website, http://www.irs.gov/formspubs. State tax forms are available from the Illinois Department of Revenue website, http:www.illinois.gov/taxforms. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to view and print tax forms. The software is available for free download from the site.

A reminder we make every year - we can help you find and print the forms you need. However, library staff are not accountants or tax preparers - we cannot answer your tax questions. The Library does have "The Ernst and Young Tax Guide" and "J.K. Lasser's Your Income Tax" to help you prepare your tax return.

MACY'S MUSEUM ADVENTURE PASS PROGRAM

Venture into an aardvark den, and master a mythical maze. Come face to face with a human-headed winged bull, and sit peacefully in a Japanese garden.

Your pass to these adventures, and many more, is already in your hands. North Riverside Public Library card holders can receive free admission to 17 exciting museums and cultural institutions throughout the Chicago area.

This special opportunity is made possible by a generous contribution from Macy’s, in partnership with the MLS.

You will need to visit the library to pick up a one week pass for the museum of your choice. Each museum is contributing four weekly passes, for two or four free admissions, depending on location. They are available on a first come, first served basis.

So many adventures await – some you might never have expected! All you need to take part in these learning adventures is a valid library card.

Note: You can only check out passes from your home library. One Museum Adventure Pass may be checked out per person, per loan period.

For a full listing of participating institutions and for check-out guidelines, go to www.museumadventure.org, or ask the next time you visit the library.

RED RIBBON WEEK

The Library's poles and trees were festooned with red ribbons in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week Sunday through Saturday October 23 through 29. We thank the Komarek PTA and the North Riverside Police Department for helping us celebrate the week, begun in 1988 by the National Family Partnership to commemorate the life and death of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, an agent of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration who died in the fight against drugs. To recognize the week, youths and adults wear and display red ribbons during the last week of October to demonstrate their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle and to remember Agent Camarena.

BE KIND TO AV MATERIALS

With our DVD, CD and Books on CD collections expanding, we ask that patrons try to handle these discs carefully. We see a great deal of damage that is caused by carelessness and neglect. Please handle discs by their edges only and don’t place them anywhere but in their proper containers. Please don’t try to clean or repair a disc if it skips or freezes. We have a special cleaner at the library for that purpose. Just report any problems when you return the materials. We thank you for helping keep our materials in the best condition for all to use.

CARRYING BAGS AVAILABLE ON LOAN and FOR SALE

In 2010, the Library stopped providing patrons with plastic bags for carrying books and other materials. Instead, we are offering the eco-friendly options of checking out and returning at no charge a heavy-duty bag or purchasing a reusable lightweight canvas bag for $2.00.

The loan period for the heavy-duty bags is two weeks, the same as for books. The overdue fine is 10 cents per day.

We thank our friends with the Library Foundation for helping us provide the heavy-duty bags.

Just a quiet reminder: Cellular telephone conversation and music from headphones can disturb your fellow library patrons. Please be courteous and not use your cellular telephone or headphones inside the library.

PLEASE TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

If there's a particular book, compact disc or movie you'd like to see in our collection, please let us know. If we can add it, we will. Patrons can place their written recommendations in the Suggestion Box or mention it to one of our staff members at the Circulation Desk.
