The Foundation is a 501(C)3 not-for-profit organization registered with the Internal Revenue Service and the State of Illinois. The Foundation will not replace tax revenue. Instead, the Foundation’s goal is to enhance the quality and range of library services and materials beyond tax revenue. The Foundation Board will work closely with staff at the Library to ensure that all gifts are put to the best use to benefit Library patrons and the community.

Serving on the Foundation’s Board of Directors are North Riverside residents Annette Corgiat, Joseph DeRosier, Marge Hook, Stephanie Lanken, Jim Nealon, Fred Orehek, Kay Subaitis, Audrey Sprague and Vera Wilt and Library Director Robert J. Lifka.

Special Macy's Shop-for-a-Cause coupon books can be used for 10 to 20 percent savings on almost all purchases including regular, sale and clearance items, plus 25 percent off a single purchase. Coupon books, which cost $5.00 each, are available at the Circulation Desk or from any Foundation Board member.

AARP TAX AIDE COUNSELORS THANKED

We want to thank the counselors from the American Association of Retired Persons Tax-Aide Program on behalf of the dozens of patrons and others whom they assisted  their state and federal tax returns in February, March and April.

AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service. This free service can answer most of the tax issues faced by middle- and low-income taxpayers with special attention to those age 60 and older.

The AARP Tax-Aide program has operated since 1968 under a cooperative agreement with the IRS as part of its Tax Counseling for the Elderly program.

Since its birth, AARP Tax-Aide has helped over 27 million individuals file their taxes at more than 10,000 sites annually. AARP Tax-Aide sites are located in places convenient for taxpayers to get to, such as senior centers, libraries and malls. Volunteers can also visit taxpayers in their homes, if they are physically unable to visit a site.

The program is available from February 1 through April 15 each year.

The AARP Foundation is an affiliated 501 (c) (3) nonpartisan, organization established in 1961. It administers publicly and privately funded programs, such as AARP Tax-Aide, the AARP Senior Community Service Employment Program, and the AARP Home Equity Information Center. The Foundation also carries out the Washington, D.C. based advocacy programs funded through the Legal Counsel for the Elderly Inc. These programs also receive support from AARP.

ARE YOU A COLLECTOR?

The library has a locked Display Case that you can use for a month. We want to show off your collection.

The board, staff and patrons of the library would like to thank Frank J. Ott for providing the September exhibit.

We would also like to thank our recent Display Case exhibitors - Kathy Fischer, June; the North Riverside Garden Club, July; and the Scottish Home, August.

Upcoming exhibits will be furnished by Carlos Marquez, October, and Barbara Cline, December.

We are seeking exhibitors for 2011.  Library patrons and village residents interested in providing an exhibit should contact Library Director Robert J. Lifka at 447-0869.

REMEMBER SOMEONE SPECIAL

The library would like to thank the many people who donated books to the Library in memory of Arthur Mathews. Jean Lewis donated "An Irish Country Girl" and "The Last Illusion" and Lilian and Roy Benson and Margaret and Gerald Reeves donated "Fools of Fortune" and "Three Early Novels: The Old Boys, The Boarding House ad The Love Department." Heather, Trevor, Simon and Ashley Sim donated "The Country Cooking of Ireland" and "Irish Blessings: A Photographic Celebration" and Liam, Ciaran and Finbar Mathews donated "B is for Battle Cry: A Civil War Alphabet," Dinosaur Parade" and "I Drive a Fire Engine."

The North Riverside Public Library accepts tax-deductible donations for the purchase of books and other library material. Contributions are lasting tributes the community can recognize and enjoy. The Library Staff is willing to select from subjects or titles provided. Once the book or material has been selected, an acknowledgment will be mailed and the donation noted with a special bookplate. Additional information regarding memorial or commemorative donations is available by calling 447-0869 or inquiring at the Circulation Desk.

RED RIBBON WEEK CELEBRATED

The North Riverside Public Library's poles and trees were festooned with red ribbons in October in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week.

We thank the Komarek PTA and the North Riverside Police Department for helping us celebrate the week, begun in 1988 by the National Family Partnership to commemorate the life and death of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, an agent of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration who died in the fight against drugs. To recognize the week, youths and adults wear and display red ribbons during the last week of October to demonstrate their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle and to remember Agent Camerena.

BANNED BOOK WEEK WINNERS

Ten lucky North Riverside Public Library patrons are winners in the Library’s annual Banned Books Week Raffle.

Lisa Eaton and Jordan Thormeyer won Borders gift cards, donated by the Friends of the Library; Elizabeth Gomorczak, Mary Kadlec, Sergey Kalinin, Jim Orth and Jan Umbenhower won tickets to "Arsenic and Old Lace," donated by the North Riverside Players; Christina Raguso won a Banned Books Week T-shirt; Mike Zdarsky won a coffee mug; and Marge Hook won a tote bag.

Each patron checking out one of the Library’s "banned books" during Banned Books Week, September 26 through October 3, received an entry in the raffle.

Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them. After all, intellectual freedom can exist only where these two essential conditions are met.

Observed since 1982, the annual event is a celebration of the freedom to read and reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted.

FOL BOOK SALE

Hundreds attended the Friends of the North Riverside Library's annual spring used book sale Saturday April 24 and Sunday April 25.

Organizers thank all who attended and the dozens of volunteers who helped set up prior to the book sale, assisted on both days of the book sale and helped tear down and clean up afterwards. CONGRATULATIONS MARY LEE

North Riverside Library Trustee Mary Lee was named CSA Fraternal Life Fraternalist of the Year for 2009 at the organization’s annual convention in July. FOTYs are volunteers nominated by their local lodges for the time and energy they contribute to strengthen their communities by participating in lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. She is a member of Lodge R. T. Crane, Jr. No. 7, which meets at the Library.

"CSA wishes to salute Mary for her volunteer efforts, especially towards the North Riverside Library," said CSA Vice President Cary Mentzer. "As a Fraternalist of the Year, Mary Lee embodies the heart of fraternalism through her hard work, dedication and energy."

Ms. Lee has been a member of CSA for over 50 years. She has been a driving force in mobilizing our lodge members in several projects in the past year, especially in terms of fund raising for the lodge, and in community volunteer service (including fund raising) for several good causes.

This year, Ms. Lee coordinated with the Library to find a major volunteer project for the Lodge's support of the library in the CSA National Project. For three months, the members, under Ms. Lee's leadership, put in 300 volunteer hours to reorganize the library's CD and DVD collection with a new tracking system. Every disc was re-coded in the computer, transferred into new boxes, with application of security tags, labels and cover sheets.

Ms. Lee also volunteers for the Misericordia Home in Chicago and participated on the Lodge's team in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Brookfield in the summer of 2008. She is an active member of Mater Christi Church, cooking and selling food at their annual picnic, and helping with other events in the Village to raise money for the parish. For the past six years she has also regularly cooked and served the homeless at St. John Lutheran Church in Forest Park and last year at St. Eulalia's Church in Maywood.

MACY'S MUSEUM ADVENTURE PASS PROGRAM

Venture into an aardvark den, and master a mythical maze. Come face to face with a human-headed winged bull, and sit peacefully in a Japanese garden.

Your pass to these adventures, and many more, is already in your hands. Beginning September 1st, North Riverside Public Library card holders can receive free admission to 17 exciting museums and cultural institutions throughout the Chicago area. What a great way to celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month! But it gets better – the passes will be available for the whole year.

This special opportunity is made possible by a generous contribution from Macy’s, in partnership with the MLS

You will need to visit the library to pick up a one week pass for the museum of your choice. Each museum is contributing four weekly passes, for two or four free admissions, depending on location. They are available on a first come, first served basis.

So many adventures await – some you might never have expected! All you need to take part in these learning adventures is a valid library card.

Note: You can only check out passes from your home library. One Museum Adventure Pass may be checked out per person, per loan period.

For a full listing of participating institutions and for check-out guidelines, go to www.museumadventure.org, or ask the next time you visit the library.

SUNDAY CLOSINGS EXTENDED
For budgetary reasons, the Library will not be open on Sundays during the 2009-10 school year. BE KIND TO AV MATERIALS

With our DVD, CD and Books on CD collections expanding, we ask that patrons try to handle these discs carefully. We see a great deal of damage that is caused by carelessness and neglect. Please handle discs by their edges only and don’t place them anywhere but in their proper containers. Please don’t try to clean or repair a disc if it skips or freezes. We have a special cleaner at the library for that purpose. Just report any problems when you return the materials. We thank you for helping keep our materials in the best condition for all to use.

CARRYING BAGS AVAILABLE ON LOAN and FOR SALE

Beginning April 1, the Library stopped providing patrons with plastic bags for carrying books and other materials. Instead, we are offering the eco-friendly options of checking out and returning at no charge a heavy-duty canvas bag or purchasing a reusable lightweight canvas bag for $2.00.

The loan period for the heavy-duty canvas bags is two weeks, the same as for books. The overdue fine is 10 cents per day.

We thank our friends at Standard Bank for helping us provide the heavy-duty canvas bags.

Video magnifiers can be used to read printed material; look at photographs and illustrations; read prescription bottles and other product labels; write checks; and complete forms. CELL PHONES, HEADPHONES DISTURB OTHERS

Just a quiet reminder: Cellular telephone conversation and music from headphones can disturb your fellow library patrons. Please be courteous and not use your cellular telephone or headphones inside the library.

PLEASE TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

Although we are not conducting a survey this year, we still want to hear what patrons and residents have to say about our library in general, as well as our staff and collection in particular. If there's a particular book, compact disc or movie you'd like to see in our collection, please let us know. If we can add it, we will. Patrons can place their written recommendations in the Suggestion Box or mention it to one of our staff members at the Circulation Desk.

SERVICES FOR HOMEBOUND

To better serve our senior patrons, the North Riverside Public Library offers homebound delivery for North Riverside patrons with a valid library card.  Through the service, library staff will delivery library materials to the residences of patrons who are homebound or who have a difficult time getting to the library.  After registering, patrons can simply call the library to request materials and the library staff will set up a mutually convenient delivery time.  When patrons are finished with their items, they may call the library to schedule pickup and delivery of new material.

Additionally, as an alternative, homebound patrons can sign up for proxy borrower services.  Under this arrangement, a library patron can call the library to have their materials held to be picked up by a designated friend, neighbor or family member.
