Homebound Services and Proxy Borrowing
To better serve our senior patrons, the North Riverside Public Library offers homebound delivery for North Riverside residents with a valid library card. Library staff will deliver library materials to the residences of patrons who are homebound or have a difficult time getting to the library. After registering, patrons can simply call the library to request materials and the library staff will set up a mutually convenient delivery time. When patrons are finished with their items, they can call the library to schedule pickup and delivery of new material.
As an alternative, homebound patrons can sign up for proxy borrower services. Under this arrangement, a library patron can call the library to have their materials picked up by a designated family member, friend, or neighbor.
To register or obtain additional information, please call the library at (708) 447-0869.
The North Riverside Public Library offers two video magnifiers for use by our visually impaired patrons – one for in-library use and one that can be checked out for three months.
A video magnifier is an electronic device that produces enlarged images of text and objects on a monitor or screen. Video magnifiers can be used to read printed material; look at photographs and illustrations; read prescription bottles and other product labels; write checks; and complete forms. An image of the material to be magnified is captured by a digital video camera. The digital video camera is connected to the monitor on which magnified images are displayed.
Ask at the Circulation Desk for more information or call the library at (708) 447-0869.
Seniors can enjoy playing cards, refreshments and socializing every Friday in the library. The free program is held in the library’s main level meeting room from 10:00 a.m. to noon. In addition, a pizza party is held every summer as well as a Christmas party with a catered lunch. No registration is required.
The Senior Drop-In is co-sponsored by the North Riverside Public Library and Riverside Township.
The library staff purchases large print books for those patrons who prefer large type. We buy popular fiction and non-fiction titles.
The large print books are located across from the Circulation Desk. They may be checked out for two weeks and renewed for one week. New large print books are shelved with the new materials across from the Circulation Desk. They may be checked out for two weeks only.
We also subscribe to “Reader’s Digest Large Print Edition.” It can be found with the other magazines for adults near the Reference Desk. Magazines may be checked out for two weeks.
Adult programs are presented once a month with speakers on various topics. All programs are held in the main level meeting room. The schedule of adult programs is listed on the library’s website. It is also listed in the library newsletter as well as in a separate adult program schedule at the Circulation Desk.
Registration is requested but not required. Patrons may sign up in the binder at the Circulation Desk or may call the library at (708) 447-0869.
The Wednesday Movie Matinee is shown on the first Wednesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. in the main level meeting room. Registration is not necessary. The schedule of movies is listed on the website, in the library newsletter, and in the adult program schedule.
If you need an accommodation for a disability, we ask that you please contact library staff a week in advance of the program.
