BIRTHDAY CLUB       birthday.gif

New prizes are waiting when you join the Birthday Club!  Stop by the Circulation Desk on the main level during your birthday month, get your photo taken for the bulletin board and discover what's new.  You'll also be entered in our monthly gift card drawing.

 CHILDREN'S AREA DISPLAY CASE

Thank you to the past contributors Nathan Komperda ("Star Wars") and Dominic Corgiat ("Cars") and Katie Manika ("Plastic Animals").

Do you have a collection or hobby you'd like to display in the new, counter-height, two-shelved, mirror-backed display case (located across from the copy machine, in the lower level)?  We will schedule displays by patrons ages 18 and younger on a monthly basis;  please leave a note or a phone message for the Youth Services department with patron's name (and parent name if under age 12), phone and a brief description of the display.  Patrons will be contacted by YS staff regarding display case availability and procedures.

Welcome to new YS Staff Members! Staffing our larger, lower-level Children's Department are a couple of new staff members.  Please welcome Bob Hovorka and Laurie Swade to our library!

Redesigned YA Area on First Floor      Young Adults (ages 12 and up) are invited to relax and enjoy the new furnishings at the far north end of the first floor.  Suggestions for enhancing the area are welcome - please drop off ideas in the Suggestion Box; still located above the book return slot at Circulation.

Unfiltered Internet Access with Parental Permission - Patrons 12 or older, with a signed Internet Parent Permission form may use the unfiltered Adult Public Access Computers on the first floor.  Please see the Circulation Desk to obtain a form, or to sign up for these computers once your form is on file.

YS Help Desk - Wondering where to find a book, what to read next, or where the closest restroom is located?  For answers to these and other important questons, ask a YS staff member at the big curvy desk just inside the new Children's Department.

Internet/Homework Computers - To use one of the two filtered Internet/Homework computers in the lower level Children's Department, visit the Help Desk.  The computers are located right in front of the desk.  Use is limited to 30 minutes per patron when others are waiting.  We've installed several databases to help you in your homwork, or general quest for knowledge:  Encyclopedia Britannica, World Religions, and others.  YS Staffer Magan McCarthy has put together a brief guide to these new resources, available at the Help Desk.

** Printing in black and white costs 10 cents.

Photocopier - The Children's Department now has a photocopier.  It's tucked in behind Internet/Homework computer #1.

** Copies are black and white, 10 cents each.

Games Computers - Our two games computers from the first floor have moved downstairs, and we've added a third.  There is no Internet access available from these computers.

Story-Time Room - Preschool and Lapsit story-times will be held in a new location in the lower level.  The Story-Time Room is located directly below the Meeting Room.  Parents will enjoy the comfy chairs located outside the room.

Board Books on Shelf - Books for the youngest patrons have moved out of the storage bins and onto the low shelves located just under the purple-trimmed windows across the aisle from the Help Desk.  Parents, enjoy the comfy chairs!

Reserving the Story-Time Room or a Group Study Room

Hold your next troop, club or group meetings in the Story-Time Room!  Use of this room is arranged much the same as the Public Meeting Room on the first floor:  advance registration is required, along with contact information, and a damage deposit.  Group study rooms (max capacity: 5 to 6 people) can be reserved in person or by phone, and do not require a deposit.

To reserve any one of these spaces, see the YS staff.

MPAA Ratings on DVDs

The Youth Services Department recognizes the importance of MPAA rating information when choosing DVDs to check out.  We would like to publicly thank the Circulation/Technical Services Department for their work in assuring that all MPAA rating information is visible (albeit in very tiny type, thanks to the DVD manufacturer/packager) on all juvenile and young adult DVD cases.

WE'RE OPEN TO REQUESTS...

Is there a book, DVD or other material that you would like us to consider adding to the collection?  Please see the YS staff, drop us a note, give us a call or email us at:  locanders@northriversidelibrary.org             or  quinnk@northriversidelibrary.org

CAN THE REFERENCE BOOKS BE CHECKED OUT?

If there is a specific need, we often allow reference materials to circulate.  Materials are usually due in one or two days, unlike circulating materials.  Requests should be direct to the YS department.  Please note that reference materials in subject areas that are needed by multiple patrons will not be permitted to circulate, to give everyone a fair chance to use the resource.  For example, reference materials on animals will not be permitted to circulate when many students are working on animal reports.  See any member of the YS staff for assistance in finding materials.
